My mother was born at Mine #40 Scalp Level and often talked about her father's job as a coal miner there. The town of Windber is what she spoke about often. They were there 1919 until 1928 and left because my grandfather was injured and his mining partner killed. They moved from Wynn Mine in Fairchance where they first lived and worked. My grandmother lost her older brother in 1923 in Wynn Mine at Fairchance to a ceiling collapse. Tough work. They moved the Hamtramck (Detroit) and then worked for the car companies.

Nice collection. I have been to many of those places but did't "see" them as you did. Wonderful art that inspires memories and the desire to go back!

Hard to read the wall of miners killed in the Windber area. Don't see by
Dad's name. He died in a mining accident in the Berwind mine in St. Michael in 1951. Believe it was Maryland shaft #28. His name was John Harrington. hermharrington@verizon.net

I have hiked the Baylor Pass several times, camped on it. I lived a few miles away and have always admired their beauty near, far and within. My grandfather helped build the stone house which was the asylum many years ago. Their beauty was ruined with the excavation and starting of a gravel pit near the town of Organ.
But the majority still flourishes with its "Splendor"

To those people who posted a note about Anka(Annie) Zahurak, She is my Aunt and we just celebrated her 90th Birthday in Nov. Like you I played in that little creek catching tad poles.

The East End Cemetery, the first cemetery for the borough, has burials for all denominations before each church had its own cemetery. It is located east of the Windber High School on Graham Ave.at 28th.St. a small road to the left across from the True Value Hardware store leads to the cemetery, it can be seen from the road. I surveyed the cemetery in the 1970's , the Windber Fire Co. cleared away stumps, weeds, etc. in the 1980's but is is now all grown up again, many markers misplaced, etc. As I have located obits.stating a burial there I have recorded it. If anyone would like me to check for a name contact me at pdshaffe1@version.net Editor for the Windber Area Historical Newsletter

To those who are interested in pictures of Windber you may want to consider joining the Windber Area Museum, $5.00 per yr., where a quarterly is sent to members that has photos and family histories in it. We always appreciate the support in trying to keep the oldest historical building in the town in good repair. Please visit when in town.

Is there any way to purchase prints from your gallery? Most of my husband's family are buried at Brush Valley Chapel (Brush Valley, PA) and I'd love to have a few of your shots to keep!

Tom, Your gallery of PA in winter is truly breathtaking. I grew up in Windber,PA.

Tom:
I'm the Secretary of the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation in Windber, PA. We've completed several restoration projects in and around Windber. One that we're still hoping to get started is restoring the Mine 40 operations as an historical site. I'm requesting permission to use your Mine 40 photos in the gallery of our website at echf.windberpa.org, with appropriate attribution, of course.

Tom,

My name is Dave Hurst and I'm currently assembling a website for a not-for-profit organization (Stonycreek Quemahoning Initiative) seeking to turn the Stonycreek River valley of southwestern Pennsylvania into a recreational destination attraction. Windber is in that valley and I need a photo of the Windber Area Museum for the website. I see that you have one in your gallery. May I have your permission to use the image on the website? FYI, the website will be going live around January 1, 2009, at www.thestonycreek.com.

The Pennsylvania Gallery gives me a very good idea of what that state looks like.

Would I be able to get a print of St Adrian Church in Delancey PA? My mother grew up across the field from this church. She spent alot of time there and it's a childhood memory of mine visiting my Grandmother in the 1960's. Please contact me if it would be able to get a print.

Wanted to know if there were any photos that I would be able to see online of Windber Pa,
back around 1910 -1935.
Mary Louise Holden 05-Aug-2008 22:44
Found this website and it was so interesting to see places in Windber Pa where both
my parents were born. Mary Tokarchick and John Lonchar. And an Uncle Michael Seback.Anyone who may be a relative or someone who may remember the names, I would appreciate hearing from them.

Tom, Your work looks great! I just toured the galleries and from images close up and personal to distant landscapes, you capture the moment with a unique eye for composition.

What do you know about Capt. Heasley? I took pictures of that same stone in 1987 and I have had a periodic obsession with finding out what happened to him ever since

Great shots from Italy! I haven't been there yet (sadly), but those photos are inspiring me to crack open ye olde passport and reconsider--given scenic Venice, historic Rome, architecturally inspiring Florence and the beautiful countryside in Tuscany, what's reasonable within a 9-day vacation timeframe?

Hello there, Uncle Tom!!!
Remember me? Ummmmm, maybe NO!!! Ok, bye!!

Thank you very much for that very lovely Christmas card you've sent me last year. I was back in Palawan for the holidays. I was a housewife for 3 weeks!!My husband has a house near his school. By the way, I have a nephew already (Lisa's second child). My mom and dad's first grandson. Me, not yet! I am back here in Brunei but I'll be home for good this September. Please send my regards to Aunt Miriam. I think she's the one in the photo wearing a blue shirt. Hope everything is doing well for you. Have a nice day :) Analyn P.Vergel de Dios

Tom-

Hi- remember me? I was one of your students way back in 1988-92(eep. I feel old). Well, I happened upon your photos and they are wonderful! I live in Oregon now(I wish I had known you were visiting in 2004- I could have given you a wine tour) and I miss the barns and churchs of western PA. Now I know to come here and see your wonderful photos. Thanks! Hope you and Miriam are well. I still think of you and my time at IUP fondly.

Tom: I've been searching for good pictures of Windber on the internet for years. These are the best that I've come across so far. My family comes from the Windber area but regretfully no one ever took any pictures of the town. I live in the Los Angeles area and seldom travel so looking at your photographs was delightful!

Best Regards!

Hi Tom!

We are spending the Xmas holiday at my bro's in LA, so had some time to browse your photo gallery. Looks great! Photography must be a serious hobby of yours. All the best, Monica

Tom, I just finished a tour of your photo gallery, especially the Italy one. The Italy photos are definitely the best yet--but maybe that's because of the wonderous flashbacks they raise and the wonderous place that it is. My favorite is the photo of the young nuns on the bridge that say so much about the trappings of tradition there while the flurry of youth strides forward. Then there are the cell phone and bike gals--don't get me started... The other photos show a great ethnographic eye for revealing detail as well. THe field of visual anthropology is really booming these days, I hear. A friend of mine, Harold Prins at Un. of Kansas, is the editor of the visual anthro. journal. You should link up with them--or vice versa. Bedazzled, Ed G.

Hello:

I just perused your lovely photos of Yellow Creek and want to thank you for sharing them. I'm a genealogy buff with ancestors (Dick, Milliron, Hice)who lived in the area in 1850, and since I myself live in California, your photos are as close as I can come to visualizing those roots. Of course, the reservoir was not there back then, but the countryside was the same. They lived between the current reservoir and Suncliff. Where do you live in relation to that? I can't imagine there are too many permanent residents in the area.

I enjoyed looking through Your galleries from America,
today. The portraits of America present a fascinating
variety of people and places with a good
photographic quality. In particular, it has been interesting
for me - as a European visitor - to get an impression
of some of the more unknown parts of America.

Keep on sharing photos !

Hi Uncle Tom-

I just spent some time looking at your recent photos-AMAZING!! You have really had some adventures in beautiful areas!

Hope you are doing well. We are gearing up for the holidays (as you can imagine-VERY festive, with the Otero family). My mom will be here on the 26th (through the 1st I think) and then my mom and Glenn are coming back for the big first birthday bash in January.

Hi to Aunt Miriam. Love,
Faye
