Hi Mike, Its been a very long time since we were neighbours in Ngunnawal but I am getting my observatory back up and running albeit in now well light polluted skies. I see you have a nice sight picked out in the hills. When you are done you must organised a dark sky night for us :)

Well, hi'a Jane! How tha hell are ya?? Yeah, gave away lifting heavy things to spend hours and hours under the stars and at a computer, to make these images...two extremes huh? :-)

Hi Mike, great site awesome shots. Your passion has really grown from the days you would try to explain it to me at Parly house.
Chris 10-Apr-2011 09:16
Mike, just outstanding work. Next time I lift my eyes to the night sky I will be even more aware of the things I can't see, as well as the wonders that I can. And thanks for taking the time to explain a bit of it to me on Saturday night. It was great to meet you. Cheers Chris

One more comment regarding images of peculiar Ellipticals and Shell Elliptical galaxies...
Have you seen the recent image at www.capella-observatory.com of NGC 5982 ?
The low contrast shells are well shown.
These "elliptical" critters are real challenging due to their ultra-low contrast detail, but at least if we can bring out that detail, we often see things we have never even imagined before!
Robert Lang 31-Jan-2011 21:50
Hi Mike,
regarding shell galaxies and other peculiar southern ellipticals, I note that there has been an recent imaging Atlas of about ~50 Bright elliptical galaxies, many of them southern objects. Most of them show subtle signs of interaction with other galaxies!!
Just "google up" the "Astronomical Journal" website, and find this paper; (year) 2009, AJ, Volume 138, Page 1417 (November 2009 journal)
You can download the .pdf version of this paper to find out how the images were made, but the mini-atlas of elliptical galaxies is accessed via the .htm version of the paper.
For many of these galaxies, these are the first relatively Wide-field and Very Deep images that I am aware of. (mostly there exist only HST images, often focusing only on the very centres of these systems)
Another beautiful imaging atlas of elliptical galaxies can be found at:
//www.astro.yale.edu/obey/galaxies
Now if only we could remove from amateur imagers' brains the unjustified prejudice that E and S0 galaxies are less interesting than spirals!!

cheers, from madbadgalaxyman

Hi Mike,

Saw you recent wins written up in AT&T.

Mike, you just have to write *the* book on imaging techniques (and if you ever go to a large format book of your work, I will be first in the queue for that with the cash as well).
Riley Sidonio 05-Aug-2010 11:27
OH MY HAT!! WHAT BEAUTIFUL IMAGES MICHELE. YOU SHOULD DO SOMETHING WITH IMAGES...........
Got sick of study so i thought i would have my own sqiz at my dads images. nothing beats 'the eye of god' (bloody Trish).
Robert Lang 13-Jul-2010 07:30
Mike!
I am very pleased that you imaged the Centaurus Cluster of galaxies. A quick literature search, a couple of years ago, revealed that there had been little imaging or scientific work done on this rather rich galaxy cluster; I am glad that there is someone out there whose motto is "go deep" in their imaging. The Cen cluster is very pec. because the galaxies group around two different redshifts, separated by over 1000 km/s, yet the galaxies seem to be at the same distance; perhaps two galaxy clusters are merging here.
In order of increasing distance, the galaxy clusters go....Virgo, Fornax, Antlia, Hydra, Centaurus.....yet Centaurus is still one of the most neglected clusters in the sky; even though the galaxies are plain as day in a 20 inch (used visually) in a good sky.
The structure of Cen. Cluster is very complex; in the first instance, the overall cluster is extremely elongated and flattened. Moreover, there are colossal numbers of subgroups/subclusters. This overall structure, which is more like a supercluster in size, is very unevolved..... though there are local areas where the galaxies have formed very settled subclusters.
Cheers, madbadgalaxyman

Yes in deed great images.
How many MPs is your CCD?
PS: Is there a way to get the same object in different wavelengths of radiation on the web.

You never disappoint Michael, your photographs are a joy to look at. It doesn't matter how many times you've seen them before, they are still spectacular every time I come back to them. They make the most amazing wallpaper! I love showing them to passers by as your images spark a great astronomical conversation :-) Good onya' mate!

For some reason, your pictures really cheered me up.

Enjoyed your pictures. I am an amateur astronomer from that other hemisphere. All the best and clear skies to you. Would love to do your Southern Skies one day. Congratulations on your observatory, it looks fine and you obviously make good use of it.

The European beauty cluster is unique as well. Something Messr. Messier appears to have overlooked.

Mike,
I've enjoyed your images for some time now, and you do fantastic work withe the Starlight H9. May I ask a few questions? Do you use the NJP for your 12" Meade? Can you? What do you guide with (when you guider? I have an H9, and starlights little guider SXV? I think, haven't used it yet an a Tak FS106 with the 200Temma II. Just love its tracking. Also have a 10" and 14" Meade LX200. Would like to buy a NJP if it will work with these two scopes. Any tips or ideas setting up the LX's? Thanks again, Mike.
