Interested in taking the workshop @ Callaway Gardens. Do you ever do any other classes or some one on one instructions? Love your pictures of the Smokey Mountains. One of my favorite places to visit.

Hi Jim
Was just looking through the new posts on Pbase and saw one of yours...
It's been many years since the Oly Forum but still have fond memories. I still keep in touch with Sue Beatrice who is doing very well for herself in the Art world and on television..
Joyce Schultz 13-Nov-2012 18:49
I had a great time in your Fantasy of lights class and photo shoot this year despite the rain. Would you be
so kind as to send me info on a decent tripod setup. By the way I am happy to say I have signed up for your classes, Foundations in photography 1-3.
Mary Sergent 18-Mar-2012 17:51
Great pictures....recently took your Photoshop Lightroom workshop, I can't find the web-address you gave us for viewing you tips, etc. Would you send me that please? Also, I'm looking to purchase an external drive to keep my pictures and program. What did you say was a good one with enough memory? I remember you built your own...but also suggested one or two. Thanks much! M Sergent

Hello Jim, I, too, am trying to get your 2009 workshops on my calendar. You are by far the best help I have ever had with my camera and my trying to improve my photo images. I look forward to being a "repeat customer." Marta Hicks

Do you know what your 2009 workshop schedule may be?...I look forward to participating!!

I fell upon your work by accident. I had taken a photo today of a praying mantus and wanted to make sure I had spelled it correctly so I googled it. That's when I saw your photo of one. You are extremely good! I love your attention to detail. I am an amateur and I use two cameras. I use a Fuji Finepix S20Pro and a Canon Rebel XT. My question for you is how do you get so close to the subject like that? I am still learning and I'm wondering if my Canon can do that?

Jim, Marta,Judy and I enjoyed the course as I mentioned in my e-mail. It was a great experience for all of us at different skill levels. You won't remember my pictures, but I was the one who prespired and had a damp grey beard, and never had the right lens, in the March 27-30th group. CD or DVD we want it. Thanks again for a ball.

Jim, Ron, Judy and myself thoroughly enjoyed the Elderhostel Mar 27-30. Everything you did was great. I felt I learned a lot about my camera, bunches of new techniques and felt really good with the attention you gave directly to me in the field. I now have bookmarked your site and will follow your future class offering closely until I can return for more help and guidance. I emailed you to request a copy of the DVD you guys put together for the last morning. I will send $ to cover the cost plus postage. Thanks so much for everything. Jim, My wife and I attended your Elderhostel March 27-30, 2008 along with your collegues Bonnie and Bob Stauffer, Bill White and Yvone. I must say you run a great show. We learned a lot, and loved a lot of scenery, and photographed a lot!. If I ever need any more surgery, I will ask for your services, plus I will bring my camera into the suite.
Two things: Can I get your mailing address so I can send you a CD with the Heller's Pulitzer prize photos of Calloway? Also could you send me a copy of the DVD made from Bill White, and thank you both for a great experience. I will ever look at a Hawk, Falcon, Owl etc, Butterfly,Flower, the same way again. If you get to Long Island please remember you have friends here.

Really enjoyed your course. Please send us any brochures on subsequent courses. Our next chore is to go through the 390 MB of pictures we shot and save the few worth saving.

Hope to see you again.

Hello,
I am Donald Allen and I have been taking pictures for 40 years...
I have a question about your flash technique. On some of your pictures you described your flash application "1/250s f/4.0 at 30.0mm iso100 with Flash full exif".
What do you mean by "exif"? I guess I am showing my ignorance but just wondered.
Thanks.

Hi. I am so impressed by both your work and your posts in the forum. I had posted a questions and was hoping that it would be you who replied but since you didn't, I am trying this approach. I am having a real hard time with vertical portrait shots and shadows. I don't really need a studio in my house but I was hoping that you might be able to give me a hint or two on how to get rid of these nasty shadows. I don't see ANY in any of your pictures. Please speak in amateur terms; which is what you are dealing with. Thank you so much, Kim. P.S. I tried the pocket bounce (since our ceilings are too high)

Hi Jim,

Thanks for posting a response to my post on DPReview about the 75-300mm IS lens. You mentioned the Brown Layer sharpening method. Could you let me know what this is? I've used Elements, but I currently use Photoshop 7. Thanks,
Kevin

I would love to hire you for our wedding photography. I know it may not be your cup of tea, but once you are there, you can go hog wild with your butterflies and bugs. Trust me you would love it.

Feel free to email me if you are interested.

Keep up the GREAT WORK!

Hey Jim,

Your images taken with the 300D are so sharp. Kudos!

I found your shots from the dpreview forums ... and I was wondering if you might share your photoshop sharpening actions?

I recently purchased a 10D and have been struggling to sharpen my images to what I am used to. Your shots are very crisp and natural looking ... and you mentioned that you have created a couple actions to sharpen things up for you.

Cheers,
Jaymz!

Jim,
You do beautiful work. I enjoyed reviewing your images. I currently own the OlyE10 and want to get the Digital Rebel, get a few good lenses first and then look what will be coming down the pike besides the 10D. I also like the PBase facility and wonder whether you did the framing of the images or whether this is provided. The black background works great. If you handled some of it, a tip or two would be appreciated.
How do I become a sponsor of PBase and are there any special capabilities attached?
Your comments would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Manfred Helsper, helspermc@mindspring.com

Hello Jim,

A while back you I say a picture you took of a couple of hippo's. I think you said they were taken at the San Diego zoo.

Do you sell your pictures? I would be interested in that one if you still have it.

Thx

(hope U still know me from the dpreview Oly forum (or dare I say UZI-forum, LOL)

... I agree on what you write on the dpreview 300D forum; using 7-spot focus IS better!

I tested both my 28-135 and 18-55 in low light. When on center focus, sometimes neither lens can get a focus (AF goes back & forth but does not achieve a focus lock). When I then switch to 7-spot, it works straight away (even though other focus-spots do not contain any more detail than the center one).

Also, on 7 spot, focussing seems more accurate, and... no +2/3 FEC needed! That's right: on 7-spot focus mode, I never get underexposed pics.

As a result, I keep it on 7-spot, except if there's something in the way which could trick the camera into focussing on that (closer) object.

Sorry to write all this in your guestbook, but I've been banned from dpreview fora 2 weeks ago. I think it's all a misunderstanding, and I tried explaining to forum admins; I've mailed abuse@dpreview.com numerous times, and I even mailed Phil a couple of times. However, I got NO answer whatsoever. A bit childish, wouldn't you agree?

Ciao,

J.

I love your shots! I also bought a Rebel 300 and love it. So far I only have the kit lens - 18-55mm but will add the 75-300 IS lens next.
A couple of questions:

1) What is your conversion process? I.e. I use Capture One to deal with initial WB and convert to a .JPG file, then Photoshop CS.

2) Did you use your 300mm zoom for any of the macro's?

3) I noticed that you use layering/USM in PS when you do portraits. Do you know where/how I can best learn this process?

Best regards,
Are

Hi Jim,

Your macro shots were just wonderful. Was really stunned by those awesome butterfly shots. If I can acheive something close to yours, it would be a dream come true. I am also using the 300D, 550EX and Canon 100mm 2.8 USM. Would be really grateful if you can spare a moment and enlighten me on the followings:

1. Roughly how far was your camera from the subject when you shot those macros of the butterflies. (ie. distance of camera to butterflies)

2. What FEC settings do you normally use on the 550EX.

3. Do you use a diffuser or any such contraption.

4. Any other advice to improve my shooting butterfly macro would be most welcome.

Keep shooting those lovely macros. They are such delightful viewings.

Best Regards.
Jim 30-Sep-2003 02:35
Jim, you test on exposure was absolutely super. I can see why I have seen so many people shoot underexposed/overexposed images. the differences are extreme and way different from AF points with film. I hope eveyone gets to see your test. Even though the segments are weighted differently, the main AF point gets the most. I wonder if the same works for flash images also. when you get a chance email me on that 3jbert@comcast.net.

hello Jim,

Love your shots. But I have question. I recieved a gift an eyptian oblisk. I want to have it translated and want to know its value. I am not planning to sell it but I have no frame of reference. Can you give me any leads as to whom I could go to for information concerning this piece?
Thank you so much.

I love your butterfly shots ... is there any way that you would consider letting a church use one as a web-based post-card? Of course, you'd be given photo credit. If you would allow this, you can contact me at lancebailles@hotmail.com

Thanks ...

Jim;
I've spent the past 3 hours reading many of the posts on the Olympus forum
many are from you. Would you be willing to give me your opinion of two
Olympus cameras I'm looking at for my applications? The C-2100 and E-100RS.
I like the UZi initially because of it's greater pixel capacity, but many
of my shots are of sporting events. Yet, I'd like to do some shots in dim
light (parties - across the room), macro and landscape. I'm wondering how
much the ability to take pictues quicker is worth (for the E-100RS). Sure
would appreciate your response. Thanks,

Oh, man. I want the uz bad! Even been in touch with olympus who gave a lame excuse to stop making them.
Guest 08-Jun-2002 15:59
Thanks for sharing your photos. You have some really nice pics in your gallery, particularly interest to me being your macro photos on your olympus as I have the 700uz (similar to yours, but smaller if I remember correctly). I particularly like 'kite with berries'...the color is amazing. Also, your photoshop work is very clean. I always have a problem cutting and inserting myself.

If you are interested, I would desire to do a print exchange with you, or if not then feel free to just stop by my gallery anyway. More information on Print exchanges can be found at my gallery.

Hi Sandman,

I'm a regular lurker (and occasional poster) on the DP Review Olympus forum, and I wanted to commend you on the wonderful butterfly and flower shots you've taken at Callaway Gardens. My wife and I love them so much, we've decided to take a May vacation from Minnesota and go check out Callaway ourselves. My question is (since Callaway isn't responding): Do they allow compact tripods in their indoor conservatories and gardens? You probably don't need one with the 2100uz image stabilization, but I'm wanting to bring one but would like to know if you've seen them being used there. Thanks -- The Cunninghamster

I have ordered an Olympus C-2100uz yesterday, soon I'll be shooting too!

Beautiful work, the blends of color and light give such variety of shape to your photography. I'm just entering the digital photo approach to photography. I still feel comfortable with my Nikon 35mm but want to begin experimenting with digital images & Adobe Photoshop for Mac X output. Any suggestions for a beginner?
