Hi Roman, We met you yesterday, as you were going out and we were going into Opal Creek. We had a lovely hike and some of our photos even turned out. From looking at your gallery I can see we have similar interests of places to go and photos to take. You offered to answer questions and I wondered if you teach also? Here is a question that came up for us yesterday. Is there a difference in the light when set on aperture priority with f 5.6 vs f 16? We were thinking about the opening of the shutter (wide/small) with short exposure/long exposure. Thanks so much.

Hello Roman, I've wandered through your galleries several times over the years and I continue to be in awe of your work. The images you make really suit my palate - thank you! Can I ask a question .... I see from one of your posts in FM that you now own a 24-70mm lens. I've been "stalking" one of these for months. I have a 17-55mm at the moment (as well as the superb Tokina 12-24mm) and I'm considering upgrading, if indeed you would call it upgrading. I know you had a 17-55mm (you may still have it) and I wondered how you felt the 24-70mm compared. I shoot mainly landscapes but I occasionally shoot portraits. Hello! I only now found your gallery here in coming via dpreview. Of the posters there yours are some of the most factual and constructive I see given to the questions/problems posted there. I have found your focus on large prints to be quite a challenge and would love to spend a weekend learning what you have to give. Somehow, the post processing you do is very good. Do you have any recommended places to learn more from in structured way. (classes or books) I live in Alabama now, Colorado native with just a few years of photo study. Should you journey somewhere for a photo safari in the U.S.A. it would be my great pleasure to offer you a bit of quide around the areas I know of. Please feel free to write the email here. Gust, actually 5700 - D70 - D2H - D2X - D300....lol. Now it is just the D70 and D300. Looking for the D3X or D900 when they come out. That should get me competitive with smaller Medium Format offerings. Stopped gy your site. Very nice, and the Macro work seems to stand out for my eye. :~) Roman

With your eye for art in nature,I pray you go east soon.The coast from North Carolina,to Maine is awesome.It is also, so different from Oregon. The Mountains from the blue ridge in NC,to the Mountains in New Hampshire and Maine are an awesome sight,any time of the year.I grew up in Conneticut,in a small town named Noank.About 20 minutes away is a place called Bluff point,I think it is beautiful there. I also spent many years in Jacksonville NC.Tobacco fields,the sea,Camp LeJune,The people.A wonderful place. Wow! you rocked me. I have recently started my own gallery of Oregon Scenic photography (info below). You could certainly compete as a pro, your work is absolutely inspirational. I am considering a semi pro effort when I retire. I want to jump on the motorcycle and tour, shoot and write. Don't know where to sell it yet...the answer will come if I just start. It always does. I have a business in Salem selling CNC production routers, lasers, waterjets and plasma cutting platforms. I just put 20 shots on to start with and will add more later. I live in Salem and recently started to take digital photogrphy very seriously. I was a combat photographer int he USMC from 1968-73 and at the time completely obsessed with photography. I have been away from the artistic pursuit for 25 years but have recently become inspired again. I upgraded from a point and shoot to a D200 (big jump but I was a Nikon advocate from way back).I'm not playing it like an irish whistle yet but getting closer. I have 18-200mm vr and also the Tokina 12-24 (we probaly both read the same reviews). I added the nikor 10.5mm fisheye recently and am probably a bit too much enamoured with it..that will pass in time. I have been brushing up on composition and perhaps I just learned more about that in the last 30 minutes looking at your artful renderings than reading volumes and habitually practicing for the last few months. I am pleased with my progress but I do know it take a lot of shooting to attain the results your getting but... I have no doubt I will arrive in time. I am learning elements and struggleing with my retouching techiques but will summarily elevate your work as my new bench mark. Terrific art work. I would be honored to have at least a brief critique of my captures from you if you can find time. I am more interested in critique than praise at this stage..I have a journey to make and not as much time as I would like. Below is my link. My gallery is a bit clumbsy just now. I just started it friday and will soon learn how to enhanse it. You have shown me the possibilities and I am all the more excited...I may not sleep much tonight. Thanks Tim.....I feel fortunate that I have just gotten to see what I shoot....the fact it touches others....and that others can see the beauty I saw....just makes it so much better. The camera is a Nikon D70 (most of the landscape shots) and some are with a Nikon D2H. Metering mode veries...a lot of time the matrix metering works...somtimes I take spot readings of a scene based on what details I want preserve in the end result...I use aperature mode when I am playing with DOF issues, and Shutter mode when speed or blurr are my desires. Manual espeically when I am shooting panos....so I have even exposure across the scene. Thanks!! Roman

Thanks for your kind comments. The owl pic is up on the "newest stuff" gallery. I ended up with only one shot that came out perfectly due to the darkness. Thanks Phil and Cassie, your comments are just more inspiration to me. I have recently found a most wonderful partner in life who supports me going professional in the nature/landscape arena of photography. I have a lot of work to do before I can be considered one of the masters....but know with time and patience....I can reach that level. Watch here for a link to my new web site I am building, which will contain all my work in my portfolio.....and as always, I will post my most recent work here. Thank you everyone for your kind comments...they have been instrumental in making my choice to follow my heart and work hard at stepping my photography up the next level. Over the next year, I will be learning how to make this wonderful tool a part of me and you will see much more photos coming from those efforts.....and hopefully more refined photos. I took these in aperature priority mode with the kit lens..I am used to using the spot meter a lot, but with this one....the matrix metering is actually quite good. Have everythig set neutral...no sharpenig...(as I like using USM instead of leting the camera choose for me) but aside from that, not much tweaking. D70 is pretty light...but I bought a pack to carry all my gear (just added a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and Sigma 105MM macro....so pretty heavy) I carry my gear including tripod...everywhere I go. I give the D70 wonderful marks. It has the traditional nikon slight underexposure to keep the hilights preserved...(I like it like that) but the vividness of the color seems a little stronger than the older nikons i have seen in action. I shoot in Adobe II color space. Since I got my lenses, I am playing hookey tomorrow (boss approved....lol) and going out to the columbia gorge....and the coast Saturday.....will post some sunday when I have time. Roman

Hi Roman, I think you mentioned being in Oregon. I am too, living in Springfield. I think your photos are really nice, good color and white balance right on. How did you have the camera set up? Did you use mostly default settings? Just wondered because I think the photos came out very well. I have a D1x and have adjusted to some of my favorite settings. The D1x is heavy (though I carry it on daily walks) and I am thinking the D70 would be a great addition. I would enjoy hearing from you about your impressions of the camera, and seeing more of your fine work. Thanks, Vern Rogers

I like all of your Photos, escpecially the one with the Steam Engine and little girl - I have included your site in my favourites. By the way, I am a Canon 300D , Canon G2 and S45 owner. I also love great photos
