Mary Ann,
Really enjoyed your Point Molate photos - I lived there in the early 60's. I would be interested in purchasing a few prints. Is this possible? Thank you very much. R J Gallagher email rjgall456@mac.com

Hi Mary Ann,

Great site and fabulous photos! I particularly love the photo of the San Francisco Bay salt flats. I work in a non-profit science research lab and am interested in using a photo when presenting information about Halobacterium to teachers and researchers. Will you contact me?

Thanks!

Hi Mary, Thankyou for your comments! I think your travels were rather more extensive than ours! The boat was very relaxing and destressing though and we did get some exercise :-)
The tomb at Xanthos was the other side of the road (same as cafe) but 15-20 mins around and on the opposite side of the hill. No one else was there and it was good to be at peace with the ancients!
Regards and thankyou for posting your inspiring shots!

Wow, great response. Will also add a couple of thoughts re Benjamin's questions.
But, first, I found out that adding a link to your "my forum" area
will let people find their feedback/questions on the actual photo/gallery page
as this provides a link at the top to the image that drew the question.

You can put the Link line (below) in your edited Profile msg or in your Guestbook
by just typing something like the following but substituting " " signs for
the "[" "]" and placing your actual forum ID # for the "xxxxx" below.

===
Forum message replies can be read at:
[a href="http://forums.pbase.com/forum?forum_id=xxxxxx" target=_blank>http://forums.pbase.com/forum?forum_id=xxxxxx[/a]
===

The 'target=_blank' parameter makes a new page for the viewer so they
can still find your photo pages after.

Re Benjamin :-)
Abraham (there are questions as to whether he was a real person) was
born in Urfa and moved to Harran for years. They had different names back
then (Ur and Haran). "Abraham's Cave" (where he was said to be born) is
not far from the place with the pool named for him but we didn't know about
it. I doubt I would have braved the crowds who throng to get into that tiny
space though.

As for light, Mary Ann waits patiently for good lighting on what she
photographs and that's why she gets very good results. She tried to teach
me that but learning can come slowly!.

Benjamin,

I'm overwhelmed by all the comments you've made, and rather than answer each one, I'll answer several in one message.

I believe you can spell Cappadocia in an infinite number of ways.

About glow of rocks: it is just there, it's nothing that I do with my camera. If you visit these old places late in the day, as we usually did, the rocks do glow.

Andrys is definitely not a vegetarian, but I've never seen anyone who loves watermelon as much as she does.

About our cave room: the good point was that it was completely quiet in there. The bad points were that it was completely dark at all times, and a fine white dust constantly fell on everything in the room.

I don't use a polarizing filter, though I would like to; unfortunately, the rim of my telephoto lens is bent and my filter won't go on. And the balloon photo you remarked on was taken with my P&S, a Contax T3.

The prices in the jewelry store were not all that cheap, unfortunately. They expect you to bargain to a point, but then you hit a wall.

The rocks with heads: yes, those are natural. The top rock was a different kind of layer, harder than the lower rock, so eroded differently.

BECOMING a mosque? I thought the muslim invasion happened long ago.
Yes, but they just got around to turning this ancient structure into a mosque.

re: image 36334840
Hmmm. I don't remember the Biblical Abraham travelling through Turkey. I imagine Biblical history happening between present day Palestine and the Mesopotamian valley to the east in Iraq.
Mesopotamia is mostly in Turkey now, and Turkey is full of biblical history; everyone in the bible seems to have traipsed through.

re: image 36326963
Is that Andrys going native? Sorry if I'm wrong, Andrys! :-) Nice colors in the dress.
Yes, a rare view of Andrys dressed up.

re: image 36311647
Why not take a photo?
Because Irfan is extremely conservative, and if you follow Islamic custom strictly, you cannot have your photo taken. Our guide had a bad experience with this, so he was very cautious here.

re: image 36023284
If you had a book for every place you visited, that would be a lot of heavy luggage!
Good observation! I started the trip with 10 books, foolishly, and added many more books as well as many rocks. By the end my suitcase was unliftable.

re: image 36291821
An interesting pale blue to the water. Haven't seen that anywhere. Some kind of salts?
The white is calcium. I think the blue is just the usual water reflection color over white.

re: image 36549980
Wouldn't you like a bathroom floor like this?
Yes! In fact we met a mosaic maker in the region and he did work like this. Love it.

re: image 36173421
Now the Hagia Sophia came first in Andrys' album. I'm puzzled.
I'm sticking to the chronology of our trip, and Andrys isn't. We were in Istanbul at the end.

re: image 36018272
The pillar on the right looks fluorescent! There's nice glowing light in all your pictures, even from the rocks. Is it your camera or some special technique?
Well this time it's because my flash went off. It was after sunset when we visited here.

Thank you for spending more time than anyone except maybe Andrys and me looking at my photos.

Mary Ann

Hi Mary Ann,
I'm a web-friend of Andrys. She told me about your site. I took a quick look. I can see that after the 'Turkey feast' over at her site, I have another one waiting here. :-) I've gotta run, but I've bookmarked this page, and I'll be back with comments.
