I was just doing a search on Long Binh and happened upon your collection. I was old enough to read the news, watch the news and listen to the guys returning, but too young to enlist (born in '57). My brother enlisted in the Navy in 1969 but somehow manged to get himself kicked out while he was training for Vietnam duty at Balboa Naval Base, Panama.

Thank you for taking the time to organize and make the pictures available. It adds another perspective to my interest in history. I am making this a "Favorite Place" and look forward to periodic visits to it. I am sure that my youngest daughter (High School Senior) will find this fascinating for she too appreciates history.

You guys were (and remain) a special breed and you all have my eternal gratitude for your service (voluntary or not), honor and commitment to duty. It took far too long for all of you to receive the accolades you such richly deserve.

David,

I have a copy of your picture "Happy Pilot" It is a black and white print. There is a good chance I took the picture and you developed and printed it in Phu Loi. Looks like Sam Newby is sitting in the right seat in my copy.

I was with Avel Central, Mar. 68-Mar. 69, stayed in Avel hooches in the 605th. Many good photos, even saw the Papa San we had...the one with the hat on in the pic of 3 of them. Knew Pipesmoke guys, 128th guys, brought home a TeePee club ashtray...treasure now. First Infantry Div. Museum in Ill. has a hand drawn sapper map of the entire Phu Loi Base Camp on display. I have photos of it I can email to you if you're interested. It was taken from a Viet Cong officer killed by a perimeter patrol in late 1967, no doubt preparing for Tet. Amazing detail for hand drawn. Check out our Avel Vietnam website...hundreds of photos from Avel units all over Vietnam. Many of Phu Loi, including one of old PapaSan. Thanks for sharing your wonderful collection of pics.

I was stationed on the Corpus Christi Bay in 68-69. Yes we had many Huey pilots..a few Generals too...land on the Corpus Christi Bay just for the meals. I had lost my slides so it was great to see pictures of the ship & Vung Tao. My best friend from High School, Don Maloof, flew Huey's for the 229th at LZ Sharon 68-69. Great pictures! Thanks

1969 ... served w/ HQ, 34th GS Group. Their Circle 34 BOQ was located within the 3rd Fld Hospital compound. Not seen in "Saigon from the air" is H-3 to the left of where the photo was taken from; straight ahead at the intersection on the right is 3rd Fld Hosp and Circle 34 BOQ; and on the lower left just before the intersection is the H-pad used by 3rd Fld Hospital. Newport BOQ is the white 'highrise' straight ahead. Also, I believe this was taken in the flight pattern into H-3. Flew it often. Amazing what one can recall after 40 years.

Good pictures. I was 1ID Graves Registration Jul67-Jul68. Based at Di An, Lai Khe and Quan Loi as the need presented itself. A draftee then but eventually added 20 years total time in USAR & ARNG. Rode by Phu Loi many times on convoy but never stopped. Found you by surfing to find Phu Cong where I (we) helped the Green Berets out in June of 68. Thankyou for your service. US56585543

Hi David, thank you for sharing you experiences. Fyi, my intersection was Tenneco's Gulf-of-Mexico, Ship Shoal 182 field, where I worked as an operator, 1987-1989. I much appreciate being able to share your pictures with my family. Take care, and best regards, John

David - Your photos of Viet Nam are incredible. They give a real sense of the people living in that area at that time. For those of us who have never been there, and only know the Vietnamese people from American movies, you've managed to give them a human quality we rarely (if ever) get an opportunity to see. Thank you for sharing them, and thank you for your service.

Hi David, I was searching Phu Loi and came upon your site...really beautiful pictures of your life. Your site inspired me to drag out my old slides and start putting together a gallery. I was in the 213th ASHC Oct. 68-Oct 69 in the Supply Room as a Supply Clerk/part time door gunner. In your ariel view of Phu Loi I can't quite make out where the 213th area is located. Do you have another picture that shows more of the base? Thanks for your beautiful and life long work, hope to hear from you soon.
I am located in Etowah, NC just outside of Hendersonville and Asheville, NC

Eventually, I manage to have a look at your photo base. It is amazing and it is fun to see some familiar faces in your photos. Hope you'll continue posting photos from seminars so I may someday see my face on some of them. :) So, thank you for this enormous collection!
And by the way, Happy New Year!

My name is Ken Williams, and I was the Crew Chief for Pacesetter 6 during my tour in Vietnam and flew with you many times. I retired as a Sergeant Major in 1993 at FORSCOM Headquarters in Atlanta, GA. My door gunner was from Ohio if I remember correctly last name Sadler!
Joe Reeves 05-Nov-2006 19:08
Nice photos, David. I don't remember you, but there were a lot of pilots at PHI. I am Joe Reeves and was at PHI from 1969 to 1985, the last few years as a night pilot out of Morgan City. I have a website at www.joesue.com with lots of travel photos among other things. I am working on my history and most of my pictures were lost in a fire in 1988. I took the liberty of downloading a couple of your rig pics to use on my site. Hope that is OK. If you visit my site, feel free to download anything you like. Joe

Are you still living in Volgograd? I have a frined there who has invited me to visit her and am thinking of making the trip to see her(she was an exchange student who lived with us almost 14 years ago). I would be traveling alone and would like any advice you may offer me.
Bob Morris 10-Apr-2006 22:15
Dave, it's good to see you (and your pictures of the 605th) back on-line. The shots from Vung Tau brought back some memories.
Paul B.Kremer 11-Feb-2006 17:18
Hi there! Finally found some time and visited your photo page! Well, though I've seen most of them pictures before, it's still fun to look at them on the web, sort of "live" thing, you know. The lady who looked through them with me, liked them too. She's on some of them. Take care and stay in touch. Your nieghbour neighbour. Paul.
