Great zoom lens. VR works great, it's very responsive on my D300 (great combo) and plenty sharp enough.

Here are a few galleries with plenty of 70-300 samples as well as some 17-55 f/2.8:

This is a great lens! It has performed wonderfully for me with my Nikon D-80. It brought me closer to my subjects than I’ve ever been before. I had no problem using it on auto setting or manual. Image quality has been fantastic. The only drawback was that I could not photograph in low-light situations without using a flash. I sold this lens and bought the Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM to correct that problem. One of my favorite photos taken using the Nikkor 70-300mm lens http://www.pbase.com/rollosphotos/image/98442686

For the money, I think there's no lens more versatile than the 70-300mm VR if you're shooting photos at car race tracks. And the quality ain't too shabby either :>http://nikon70300.dpnotes.com/nikon-70-300mm-samples-from-the-super-gt-race/

I've got this lense from about 3 months with D80 camera. I would say it's a bit heavy (700 grams with camera it's 1,5 kg) and dark in general outlook of the photographs. Very good Vibration Reduction however below 2s of the exposure time (over 2s and motion will be blurred). Very good lense for half-amateurs who are looking in a bit artistic photographs.

This lens is miracle and can be compared with 80-400 VR in terms of picture quality however, it's got faster focus and 3 times lower price. If you don't desperately need to go 100mm farther. Here're a lot of 300mm shots from Central Park with this lens:http://www.pbase.com/msimic/cpark

Today I had the possibility to try a brandnew 70-300VR2. Straight out of the box it performed very well. The VR2 is just brilliant. Maybe I do shake with the ideal frequency of 10Hz :-) However, the VR2 completely eliminates camera shakes which results in sharper images. On the long end (300mm) with full open aperture (5,6) images are visibly softer but still okay. This can be eliminated by closing the aperture one step or two and reducing to around 280 or 250 mm. In some tests it was complained about yellow/blue CA's but the lens I could test did not produce CA's. At least not at 300/5,6 and the actual conditions. It seems that the lens works very good at 200mm and even better at the lower end (150/100/70mm).
So what do I choose now? The 70-200/2,8VR for € 2000.- or the 70-300/VR2 for around € 520.-??? I am not sure that the 70-200 is 1500 euros better... what do you think?
Regards
Stefan

Nice general purpose tele-zoom. VR is good. Seems a bit soft at 300mm, but a solid zoom. Has manual auto/manual focus as well as pure manual. Two VR modes, one for hand held, and a second active setting for shooting from a moving platform such as a car. Balances well on my d200.http://www.pbase.com/prinothcat/hummers was shot entirely hand held with this lens.

Light compact sharp lense with IQ rivaling nikkor 80-400 vr at comparable focal length. Second-gen VR and AFS. A few Samples here.
